Calaveras County is located on the West Slope of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. California Highway 49 and Scenic Highway 4 are main arteries for access to most parts of Calaveras County. By traveling on Historical Highway 49, you will find Angles Camp, San Andreas and Mokelumne Hill as well as turn offs for Mountain Ranch, Sheep Ranch, Railroad Flat, Vallecito, & Murphys. Scenic Highway 4 will travel you through Copperopolis, Angels Camp, Vallecito, Murphys, Arnold, Dorrington, Cottage Springs, Bear Valley and over the Ebbetts Pass by Lake Alpine to South Lake Tahoe and the Reno area. Other roads and Highways that connect to 49 & 4 are 108 by way of Sonora to 49, 120 from 99 to 108/Jack Toe to 4. Calaveras County has many different elevations and climates throughout - Please check our weather page for live forcasts and road condition reports before traveling through the mountain areas. Winter Conditions exist more often than not and you should always be prepared by carrying chains/flashlights/water and other safety/emergency equipment. And...Always buckle up!
